Frank Herbert's birthday: Frank Herbert was a science fiction author, journalist, and photographer, and is best known for his Dune series. Dune, the first book in the series, was published in 1965 and is considered a classic in the science fiction genre (Wikipedia quotes it as being the best selling science fiction novel of all time). He died February 11, 1986.

The main cast of characters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars

First episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars aired on Cartoon Network: An animated series set in the Star Wars universe and taking place between the movies Episode 2: Attack of the Clones and Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. Although SW:TCW featured animated versions of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as appearances of other well know Star Wars characters, it also introduced the character Ahsoka Tano, a padawan under the tutelage of Anakin.

Cast from the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation

First episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation aired on UPN: ST:TNG was the third TV series in the Star Trek universe (after TOS and TAS) and was the first spin-off, taking place 100 years after the setting of the original series. It aired 21 years after ST:TOS and went on for 7 years, far outstripping the run of the original.
